MTSU's June Anderson Foundation announces 3 scholarship recipients
Three nontraditional students at Middle Tennessee State University got a boost to their education as recipients of the 2024 June S. Anderson Scholarship. The foundation annually awards full-tuition scholarships to students age 25 and older who are preparing for careers in fields that are nontraditional for women.

MTSU physics, honors sophomore named 2024 Goldwater Scholar
Middle Tennessee State University sophomore and Honors Buchanan Fellow Ariel Nicastro was recently named as a 2024 Goldwater Scholar. She is one of 10 students from Tennessee institutions to receive the award this year and the only one from MTSU. The Goldwater Scholarship Program, one of the oldest and most prestigious national scholarships in the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics in the United States, seeks to identify, encourage, and financially support college sophomores and juniors who show exceptional promise of becoming this Nation's next generation of research leaders in these fields. A physics major and student in the MTSU University Honors College, Nicastro was among more than 430 college students selected from more than 5,000 applicants to receive the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship this year.

Catheryn A. Bolick Receives Michael Barla Scholarship
Catheryn Bolick (Middle Tennessee State University, 2019) is a 2023-2024 recipient of a Michael Barla Scholarship. Catheryn Bolick graduated magna cum laude with a perfect 4.0 GPA from Middle Tennessee StateUniversity (MTSU) in May 2023 with bachelor's degrees in biology and clarinet performance, with minors inFrench andchemistry. In 2018, she was one of only twenty students selected for the Buchanan Fellowshipprogram through the MTSU Honors College, culminating in November 2022 with the defense of her originalmolecular biology research thesis. She received several awards throughout her undergraduate career, mostnotably several Outstanding Student of the Year awards from the Biology Department and the HonorsCollege, as well as a 2023 Phi Kappa Phi National Fellowship. Catheryn served in many leadership roles forthe MTSU Circle since her initiation in 2019, including secretary, vice president, and Circle President (2022-2023). She also served as a music theory tutor, vocalist for the Reformed University Fellowship music team,clarinet teacher, swim instructor, and nursery volunteer for her church. She performed clarinet in variousmusical ensembles through the MTSU School of Music and community ensembles, and performed classicalballet with The Dancer's School in Murfreesboro, TN. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Cancer Biologyfrom the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine.

This year's recipient is Cole Jones who is an Honors Transfer Fellow majoring in Management and Leadership with minors in Business Administration and University Honors. He says being at the Honors College changed the trajectory of his life, and he is now studying to be a licensed marriage and family therapist.

Earning a degree just got a little easier for four nontraditional Middle Tennessee State University students who recently were named recipients of the 2023 June S. Anderson Scholarship. Funded through the June S. Anderson Foundation at MTSU, the scholarship recipients are given full tuition for a year.

Economics student named MTSU's first Tennessee Doctoral Scholar
MTSU doctoral student Yolunda Nabors was recently named the university's first Tennessee Doctoral Scholar. Now in her final year of the Ph.D. in Economics Program, the award covers Nabors' tuition and provides her with a $20,000 stipend plus additional funds for research and professional development. The Tennessee Higher Education Commision designed the Tennessee Doctoral Scholar program to "increase the number of minority students who earn a Ph.D. in Tennessee and to encourage these graduates to seek faculty positions by providing financial assistance for up to three years of graduate study," according to the program's website.
