MTSU's June Anderson Foundation announces 3 scholarship recipients
Three nontraditional students at Middle Tennessee State University got a boost to their education as recipients of the 2024 June S. Anderson Scholarship. The foundation annually awards full-tuition scholarships to students age 25 and older who are preparing for careers in fields that are nontraditional for women.

MTSU Tourism and Hospitality major leading way for newly accredited program
Five years after launching, Middle Tennessee State University's Tourism and Hospitality Management program has been designated as the first and only accredited hospitality degree program in the state by the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration. Learning about MTSU's tourism and hospitality program was a game-changer for junior Kenady Rix, who was awarded a $3,000 scholarship from the Tennessee Hospitality and Tourism Association Education Fund. "I have a natural passion for serving others, and I've always worked above and beyond in any employment role that I'm in to serve guests well," Rix said.

MTSU psychology students work with THP to design testing for trooper promotions
Industrial-Organizational Psychology students at Middle Tennessee State University are getting real-world experience collaborating with the Tennessee Highway Patrol to identify future leaders for the agency. This summer, more than 200 THP troopers and sergeants vying for promotions underwent a multifaceted examination process designed by students and faculty in MTSU's Center for Organizational and Human Resource Effectiveness, or COHRE.

MTSU political science student works on draft of legislation adopted by Metro-Nashville city council
Middle Tennessee State University political science major Yusuf Dogan contributed to a nonbinding resolution later passed by Metropolitan Council of Nashville and Davidson County. During the spring semester of his freshman year at MTSU, Dogan was required to write a mock piece of legislation for a project. That experience would translate from the classroom to the real world as part of his internship with Metro-Nashville Councilwoman Delishia Porterfield.

Inaugural MTSU Scholars Program cohort presents research into Midstate urban planning challenges
Middle Tennessee State University's Chair of Excellence in Urban and Regional Planning, or COE-URP, embarked on a novel journey this past year through its Scholars Program, a pilot initiative to provide undergraduate students with research opportunities related to explosive growth in the Midstate region. The program, which began last August and spanned the entire academic year, concluded earlier this month when participating students presented their research on key urban planning challenges in Middle Tennessee.

MTSU students take on leadership roles to produce TXMD Runway Show
Middle Tennessee State University Textiles, Merchandising and Design Program students set their sights on an "Unstoppable Future" as this year's annual fashion show recently stepped onto the runway. The record-breaking sellout show saw more than 70 design submissions from students and a whopping 80 auditions of models wanting to participate in the much-anticipated event. In the end, 48 submissions as well as students were selected for the show.

The Middle Tennessee State University College of Behavioral and Health Sciences annual Academic Awards Presentation was held Tuesday, April 23, in the Student Union Ballroom. Nearly 200 seniors were spotlighted as Honors Students, which requires a scholastic average between 3.75 and 4.0. Representatives from the Departments of Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice Administration, Human Sciences, and Health and Human Performance presented certificates to students for their academic achievements.

MTSU Aging Health and Development students 'cruise' into fun for course work
Middle Tennessee State University Human Development and Family Science students recently went full speed ahead with a landlocked "cruise" party held at St. Clair Street Senior Center. MTSU students and senior citizens alike played games, did the limbo, danced the macarena and concluded the celebration with a conga line as part of coursework for the Aging Health and Development class. The class has been beneficial for Human Development and Family Science majors Sydnee Washington of Johnson Cityand Rylee Scott from Brentwood. Most students in the undergraduate program plan to work with children. But one in six children in Tennessee live with their grandparents, Weir said. "It's a great opportunity to get some experience working with older adults," said Human Development and Family Science lecturer Samantha Weir, who teaches the course each spring and fall. "And the intergenerational experience for the older adults is so valuable and uplifting for them."

Attending the state of Tennessee's Day on the Hill at the state Capitol may be one of the high points in the collegiate career of Middle Tennessee State University graduate student Rebecca White. In February, White joined the Tennessee Psychological Association leadership team to meet with lawmakers about legislation affecting the profession and those served by it.
